Chapter Eleven
All things considered, the hike up the mountain had taken less time than they thought it might, though that did little to ease the ache in their thighs as they worked up the final upward slope, pushing through the nearly knee-deep snow. As the day had progressed, the wind had eased and it had grown a little less bitterly cold, which was of small comfort, but Mary Beth would take every single comfort she could get.
âAlmost there, right?â asked Roxanne, breathing hard as the slope grew steeper, lifting up so that they were nearly looking straight up into the cloudless sky.
âJust over this ridge,â Mary Beth replied through her own gasps of breath. Each exhale blew out a pale cloud of steam. Looking over her left shoulder, she could see Bruce plodding up behind them no complaint in his stride, Glory working to keep up.
Lilly was using a long, ragged branch, ramming it into the snow to help lever herself along, but she was slow and clearly struggling. âYou okay, Lilly?â Mary Beth asked, and Lilly nodded, lifting her hand.
âIâm fine, dear,â she said, though she was nearing the point of breathlessness. âDonât worry about the old lady.â
Roxanne nodded at Mary Beth and slowed a bit, falling back until she was next to Lilly as Mary Beth reached the top of the slope, where the hill crested, leading to the backyard of the Buchananâs homestead. Bruce sensed it, too, and picked up his pace, leaping through the snow, causing Glory to giggle as she surged upward as well, making a surprisingly quick pace through the deep snow.
Mary Bethâs fingers tightened around the Ruger as she walked, wanting it close to her and ready just in case. The hill rose sharply, then evened off and she lifted her leg high, propping it, then pushing off, carrying herself up over the ridge to where the backyard evened out.
She gasped.
âNo,â she whispered as she looked upon the house, the home of friends and neighbors, the place that had likely saved her entire familyâs life less than two weeks ago.
The once beautiful and functional home had clearly been raided. Solar panels which had helped them survive the first few days of the power outage were missing from the roof and from their spots on the backyard, leaving exposed cables dangling in their wake. Hasty removal of the roof mounted units had torn away shingles and broken the siding, exposing some of the inner layers of the exterior walls.
Mary Beth stood in the back yard, looking upon the house, her eyes clouding with frozen tears as she considered their next move and wondered what was still to come. The solar power of the house had been a huge draw to their trip up the mountain, without thatâ
She tried to push those thoughts aside. The truth was, with or without the solar panels, the Buchanan home was larger and more solid than the hunting cabin, and would provide better lodging and more protection in comparison.
